A2 - Genre

Before I embark any further on my planning, I first want to consider the variety of genres I could choose to work in. While many modern films are a hybrid of two or more genres, they tend to have one aspect that is clearly the main genre. For example, while the 2012 film Skyfall has elements of sci-fi, comedy, romance and fantasy, it is clear that the main genre shapes it to be a spy film. The top grossing genres/films were as follows:

The Avengers
The top grossing film of 2012
Three of the top 10 films of 2012, as can be seen above, are all superhero films. While it would be brilliant to create a superhero film, it is impractical for me to create one for several reasons. One such reason would be because I have little experience at using CGI and other such tools to create the illusion of a superhero's powers. Another reason is because superhero films often rely on the appeal of a single lead actor (Robert Downey Jr., Christian Bale) and a well-established fictional character (such as Iron Man or Batman) to draw in audience, and I cannot create such a successful superhero in the time I have been given to do this task.
Brave
8th highest grossing film of 2012

In addition, two of the other top 10 films of 2012 are animation films, as well as the 11th top-grossing film. While this would suggest it may be a good idea for me to make an animated film, I have no interest in making an animated film. In addition, I have little practice in doing animation to the scale necessary for a film trailer, so it would likely be an unimpressive product compared to what I could make for a live-action film.

Other genres I may wish to consider are:

The Hobbit
6th highest grossing film of 2012
Fantasy: The genre of fantasy is one of the biggest earning film genres. Fantasy films tend to involve an all-star cast and large battle sequences, with incredible scenery and an epic plot line. Because of the difficulty of arranging a large battle sequence and finding impressive scenery in Cornwall, it would be impractical to create a fantasy film trailer.
The Hunger Games
3rd highest grossing film of 2012

Science-Fiction: The sci-fi genre represents the idea of exploration of the universe, with common themes in sci-fi being aliens, spaceships and robots. Some of the biggest-earning films, such as Star Wars and Star Trek, are clearly sci-fi. One of the problems with creating a sci-fi film, however, is that it takes a lot of creation for props, CGI and prosthetics. As I understand that I haven't got enough practice at using prosthetics, CGI or props, I have therefore chosen not to create a sci-fi trailer.

The Woman in Black
61st highest grossing film of 2012
Horror: The horror genre is one of the most versatile genres of film, as it can include a wide variety of sub-genres, from supernatural horror to comedy horror and apocalyptic horror films. The main aim of horror films is to scare audiences, and for that reason it can be one of the most enjoyable genres to make. Because low-budget British horror films such as Shaun of the Dead and the Woman in Black have proven to be incredibly successful (the Woman in Black gathered over $125 million, from a budget of $15 million), I have decided to make a horror film. Because the horror genre has a remarkable profit income compared to the money spent making it (for example, Paranormal Activity and the Blair Witch Project cost very little and made millions), it would likely be successful if it was a genuine project. However, I will need to be careful to ensure that it actually is scary, rather than looking stupid.

  1. Proficient/excellent consideration of genre/industry. You have obviously thought carefully about what genre you wish to work in.
